Opinions of students at Baylor University differ on the topic of high school uniforms.
High school uniform requirements remain a controversial topic in society. Baylor students were asked to share their opinions on the matter. Are high school uniforms a good idea?
Boise, Idaho, sophomore Zion Cho provided his outlook on why he thinks “public high schools should have no uniforms.”
“If the school is under a government jurisdiction, students should be able to express themselves through their clothing,” Cho said.
Chandler, Ariz., senior Amy Surrency offered her opinion on why uniforms should be “required” for students.
“I think it gets rid of people wearing inappropriate clothes to school, and it causes less distractions in the learning environment,” Surrency said. Uniforms would help with “discrimination against people who can’t afford nice clothes” and would decrease the amount of bulling that is “appearance related,” Surrency said.
Philadelphia, Pa., senior Patrick Cook said that“the way you dress is a way to express yourself.”
Uniforms are “uncomfortable,” Cook said, and in his opinion, being uncomfortable while you learn can cause students to be less focused in the classroom. Another issue involving school uniforms, according to Cook, is who will pay for them? “Are these uniforms going to have to be state funded? If so, they will have to come out of our tax dollars,” Cook said.
