We had a guest speaker, Dr Meredith Clark, speak to our class about cancel culture and black twitter.

She explained how people use black memes in their everyday lives. Most of the memes that have remained popular throughout the years are of African American people and I think we forget to give credit where its due. Everyone at some point has likes, commented or interacted in some way with a black meme.

Dr. Clark also spoke on cancel culture. My opinion on cancel culture is that is very negative. Cancel culture is when people “cancel” others for being insensitive, what they have done in their past or just making a simple mistake. I think individuals do need to be held accountable for their actions, but “cancelling” someone who has changed, or is in the process of bettering themselves only causes damage. How do others expect people to be honest and try to improve themselves and their knowledge if people are constantly worried about being “cancelled”. Before you cancel someone, try to explain why you think hat they are doing/saying is wrong and give them ways they can try to improve. There is no room for improvement within cancel culture.
